Hello fellow computer scientists, I am writing this post simply because I took a college course on social media, and chose to observe yours. I did this because, like many of you, I am interested and am involved in computer science, so I wanted to learn and read about something I am passionate about. Simply put, I was fortunate to have had some knowledge about computer science before studying this subject. I have gathered over the last three months that the blogger sites about computer science reflect much of the CS population. Computists are known not to be the most social group, and whether or not this is true in real life, it most certainly is true on the web. I believe the general unfriendliness to newcomers might be a reason why computer science is such an unrepresented study for the amount of potential the subject has. Computer Science offers a high starting salary, easier acceptance in a computer science school because there are not many applying, job stability, and other perks to the study, yet only a small percentage of people choose a future on computing.

The main problem with computer science blogging is user friendliness. Other blogs, like cooking, sports, and other sites welcome newcomers with their arms open, and give them easy to read posts and encourage them to contribute to the sites themselves. Blogging in the computer science world as a newbie, on the other hand, is like sticking your hand in a lions mouth. The lingo on almost every site is geared towards the elite of the computer science world, those that don’t worry about learning base languages and are already creating programs used by major companies. Partly, it is the intellectual talk between the masters that scares away many of the potential computer scientists. There is also the sites themselves. For sites geared towards computer science, they are awfully confusing to navigate and are a poor representation of online usage online. It took me quite a while to learn how to find what I wanted to, and even now I am lost on many potential additions to these sites. Finally, the online community is brutal. The online posts I read coming from curious people looking to go into computer science were scoffed at, and these people were told to go ask their mommies or do their own research before joining the “elite group”. What many of the computer scientists don’t seem to understand is the online blog isn’t just a facet for sharing new public and personal discoveries in the field, but rather it it a place for help and learning those who do not understand the advanced topics.

This is not a bash on any of your intelligence or computer science, but rather it is a plea to change the ways we operate on the web. Computer science is respected in its difficulty and the passion required to work in this field, but why shouldn’t we help people who are curious, and make the field easier to begin working in for those curious souls? If we could pause our work for just a bit, and open a new window in the computer and contribute more to these sites, it could do wonders for the image and output of the computer science field.

I found this article seemed relevant to the conversations we had on privacy on the internet and problems with a narrowed scope because our browsers cater to our interests and filter out things we usually don’t need to see. I like what this article has to say about google; that even though it isn’t evil and it’s one of the most helpful tools on the web, it would be smart not to blindly put all of our trust in this monopolized site

Camera That Describes What is Captures:

Although this doesn’t particularly relate to computer science directly, it is a great example of how technology is moving along at a fast rate and how we are humanizing these new items. Developers are making new technology as easy to use as possible, and this seems to be the easiest by making the technology behave as human as possible. Programs like siri and cleverbot are just a couple of examples of the humanization of technology. I’m excited to see if this pattern will continue or technology growth will lean towards a different path

Problems with Passwords:

In our discussion on the today (29th), we mentioned how businesses were requesting Facebook passwords from the employees to preview their profile before hiring them. I decided to follow that up and learned that the House or Representatives stopped laws that would have prevented requests for Facebook passwords, which is not going to help Facebook’s case if it decided to file lawsuits. I see that someone rifling through your Facebook could be considered a breach of privacy, but this could be avoided by not putting stuff you don’t want to be seen by your boss on Facebook! There are plenty of other ways to show or tell things that aren’t on a public sharing space, so clean it up!

Issues With Online Privacy:

I find it funny when people act surprised when an online tweet, message, or photo is brought up in “real life” conversation. When someone makes an online post, it is going to be on the web for the long haul, and can probably be accessed by most people. The issue in this article is a concerned high school senior complaining about online privacy from his school, and I believe the issue should be why the school expelled the student for saying the f-word online. However, I am not writing this blog to argue about the schools decision to expel the student, but I am writing to simply state when you post something online, more specifically in a public sharing space like Twitter or Tumblr, keep in mind that you might piss off a couple of people who happen to stumble upon it!

I just ran across this article (find link in citation area of this post), that says Britannica, the encyclopedia company with a 244 year long legacy, is “going out of print”. I think it’s interesting one of the last major strongholds for real print has forfeited to the convenience of the internet, and in fact I am surprised the company lasted this long. Personally, I can’t even remember the last time I actually pulled out an encyclopedia to look up something instead of just using a computer or my phone, and frankly it’s impossible to find one even on a college campus. I put this on here because, although it might be obvious, all text will eventually be obtained from the internet, and I’m going along with the majority here and saying it is not a bad thing. School texts and books are already computerized, the news is easier to watch or read online than in the paper (and more recent), books are being read online and are easier to find and cheaper, the reader can find anything he or she wants. I think it’s an amazing progression and I’m interested to see exactly where it takes us

In Noah Cohen’s piece Define Gender Gap? Look Up Wikipedia’s Contributor List, I believe the issue of an unbalanced contributor base, focused on a lack of female writers in this instance, is argued in the wrong domain, being Wikipedia. Wikipedia, at least for me, is a site used for gathering factual information, and although different genders may have some slight variance in knowledge, I would trust the article written by the scholar or researched individual of the subject I am studying. I think the lack of female contribution Cohen is writing about in this particular article pertains more to personal matter, like social networking or blogs, because information from a more diverse base would help out blogs where personal opinions and personal information might be useful. Wikipedia on the other hand, I would believe, does not benefit from gender variance, as long as the information submitted is correct. In other words, I do not think the lack of female input to Wikipedia is a problem, but it could be in other parts of the internet.

We have reached the end of Moore's Law! The constant decrease of size and increase of the numbers of transistors have kept the computer processing speed up, but now the smallest transistor possible has been made, 1 atom in size! What does this mean for computer speeds?
